Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Television news has historically played a pivotal role in shaping public opinion, setting agendas, and influencing social and political behaviors. Among youths, television remains a key medium for accessing news and information about political developments, despite the rising prominence of digital platforms (Okon & Ibrahim, 2023). Political activism among youths, defined as their participation in political discourse and actions aimed at social change, is often stimulated by exposure to issues highlighted in the media. In Kaiama Local Government Area, Kwara State, television news broadcasts serve as a major source of information for youths, providing coverage on governance, social issues, and political developments. This study explores how television news influences youth political activism in the region, examining the connection between media exposure and civic engagement.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the significant potential of television news to encourage youth political activism, its impact in rural areas like Kaiama remains under-researched. While some studies suggest that media coverage can mobilize youth participation in political activities, others highlight the risk of apathy due to sensationalism or biased reporting. The lack of localized research on how television news shapes political consciousness and activism among youths in Kaiama creates a knowledge gap. This study aims to address this gap by investigating the role of television news in influencing youth political activism in the area, focusing on both the opportunities and challenges presented by this medium (Adeyemi & Usman, 2024).
